Liver Disease Research at Long Beach VA

Chronic
liver disease is one of the top five causes of death in middle-aged urban
men. Alcohol is a commonly known cause of cirrhosis. However,
hepatitis C may be even more common than alcohol as a cause of cirrhosis.
In the Us, approximately 1.5 to 2% of the population has hepatitis C.
Among VA patients, this is increases to approximated 5-6%. Likewise,
chronic alcohol use is increased among VA patients as compared with the
general US population. Recently, fatty liver disease has become an
important cause of liver injury. Fatty liver disease occurs
primarily in persons who are over weight and have either diabetes or "pre
